What Are We Actually Looking For in a Curl Gel?

Most people judge a curl gel within minutes of applying it. We don't. At STAUNCH, we believe the real test starts once your hair has dried and your day has begun. Because definition straight after styling tells you very little about how a gel will perform over the next few hours. A good curl gel shouldn't just make your hair look defined. It should help your curls stay defined, feel comfortable and resist frizz as your day goes on. So what are we actually looking for? At STAUNCH, we believe a complete curl gel should do three things:

  • Hydrate the hair
  • Support moisture retention
  • Hold and maintain curl definition

Let's look at what each of those really means.

Hydration
Hydration is about adding water to the hair. Most curl gels are water-based and often contain ingredients known as humectants, which help attract and retain water within the hair fibre. This is one reason your curls can feel soft and hydrated immediately after styling. But hydration is only part of the story. Adding water and helping the hair stay hydrated are two different jobs. Without ingredients that help reduce moisture loss, that freshly hydrated feeling may not last for very long.

Moisture Retention
This is where many formulas begin to differ. Supporting moisture retention means helping the hair hold onto the water it already has. Conditioning agents and emollients can help reduce moisture loss from the hair fibre, leaving curls feeling softer, more comfortable and less prone to dryness throughout the day. Hydration and moisture retention work together. One adds water. The other helps your hair keep it.

Hold
Hold is the most noticeable part of any gel. It's what helps group strands together, encourages curl formation and supports definition as the hair dries. But not all hold feels the same. Some gels create a stiff cast that becomes brittle or flakes as the day goes on. Others create flexible hold, allowing curls to maintain their shape while still feeling soft and touchable. At STAUNCH, we believe hold should support your curls—not overpower them.

Why This Matters More Than Curl Type
Many people choose a gel based on their curl pattern. While curl pattern describes the shape of your curls, it doesn't tell you how your hair responds to products. Two people with the same curl type can have completely different experiences using the exact same gel. That's because factors such as porosity, the condition of the cuticle and the overall health of the hair all influence how well a product performs. That's why we encourage people to pay attention to behaviour, not just curl pattern.

How to Tell if Your Gel Is Actually Doing Its Job
The easiest time to judge a gel is right after styling. It's also the least useful. Instead, pay attention to how your hair behaves a few hours later. Ask yourself:

  • Is my definition still there?
  • Does my hair still feel comfortable?
  • Has frizz stayed under control?
  • Does my hair still feel hydrated, or has it already become dry?

If the answer is yes, your gel is doing more than creating hold.
It's supporting your hair throughout the day.
That's the thinking behind TRUE DEFINING GEL.
We designed it to deliver lasting definition, weightless hydration and flexible hold while helping curls feel comfortable long after styling.
Because we don't judge products by how hair looks immediately after they're applied.
We judge them by how hair behaves afterwards.

Always rooting for you,
